Shared Predisposition in the Association Between Cannabis Use and Subcortical Brain Structure

Importance Prior neuroimaging studies have suggested that alterations in brain structure may be a consequence of cannabis use. Design, Setting, and Participants Cross-sectional diagnostic interview, behavioral, and neuroimaging data were collected from community sampling and established family registries from August 2012 to September 2014. This study included data from 483 participants (22-35 years old) enrolled in the ongoing Human Connectome Project, with 262 participants reporting cannabis exposure (ie, ever used cannabis in their lifetime).

Main Outcomes and Measures Cannabis exposure was measured with the Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism. Whole-brain, hippocampus, amygdala, ventral striatum, and orbitofrontal cortex volumes were related to lifetime cannabis use (ever used, age at onset, and frequency of use) using linear regressions. Genetic (?g) and environmental (?e) correlations between cannabis use and brain volumes were estimated. Linear mixed models were used to examine volume differences in sex-matched concordant unexposed (n?=?71 pairs), exposed (n?=?81 pairs), or exposure discordant (n?=?89 pairs) sibling pairs.

Cannabis does not make your brain smaller


The advocators of a ban on cannabis would have us believe that even incidental use causes the brain to shrink, and that it causes psychoses or schizophrenia. The rumours about the brain shrinking stem back to this study in 2014, on which various sensational news reports are based. The study is not, however, a longitudinal study, but rather represents a snapshot study of a limited number of test subjects. The researchers themselves assert that age of first use is much more important and that their results do not point to a single conclusion.
Research into cannabis use and intellectual performance

Early this year, the University of Colorado Boulder published a study that proves the opposite: cannabis use does not cause the brain to shrink. Two new studies now support these findings. The most recent study was published in August 2015 in JAMA Psychiatry and studied the impact of cannabis on certain areas of the brain in over 1500 test subjects. This research confirms the findings of the reputable Harvard University from 2013: cannabis use does not have any impact on the size of the brain.

Researchers of Duke University in Durham/North Carolina followed 1,037 participants from New Zealand from their birth in 1972/73. One of the research heads, Terrie Moffit, professor of psychiatry at King’s College London, commented to the BBC: “It is such a special study that I’m fairly confident that cannabis is safe for over-18 brains, but risky for under-18 brains.” The results of this study were somewhat lost here [in Germany] amidst the news that cannabis is damaging for children and young people. ‘Stupid potheads’ became a buzz word in the national and international media. The key result of the study – that cannabis is safe for adults, but not for adolescents – went largely noticed. Even the left-wing newspaper taz.de reported that “smoking pot makes you stupid”.
Does smoking cannabis make you schizophrenic?

Schizophrenia is the second argument used by objectors to prevent a regulation that deals with the drug rationally. JAMA Psychiatry also recently published on this subject, stating that young men in particular should not, or only very rarely, smoke cannabis to prevent harm to the development of the brain. The research demonstrates that men who smoke cannabis regularly at a young age run the risk of harming the development of the brain, which can negatively impact the thickness of the cerebral cortex. Whether, and to what extent the development of the cerebral cortex is linked to the development of schizophrenia is disputed by researchers. In this case too, this applies to children and adolescents; the effect could not be demonstrated in adults.

One of the few German cannabinoid experts, Dr. Franjo Grotenhermen, confirms this fact in the Huffington Post: “There are no indications that cannabis causes damage to adults. The fully grown brain is not damaged.”
A lot of research has been carried out into cannabis, but no-one is interested

When it comes to cannabis it would seem that for every study there is another study that contradicts it, giving legislators extra time before they are compelled to take action. Nonetheless, there is a relatively large body of research into cannabis. Medically speaking, it is even one of the most thoroughly researched plants. According to the trade journal Medicinal Research Reviews, in 2008 alone, there were more than 15,000 studies in the field of cannabis and cannabinoids. According to Paul Armentano, director of NORML, that same statistic was higher than 20,000 in 2010.

Nonetheless, after admittance in Canada, it took another six years and plenty of additional research before Sativex, a cannabis spray for MS patients, was also permitted in Germany in 2011. In Germany, the Bedrocan cannabis issued by pharmacies must comply with strict rules. In the Netherlands – unlike in Germany – it has been officially recognised as medicine for years. For this reason even Dronabinol, the first German cannabis medicine, has a special status as prescriptive medicine and twenty years after its introduction, the brand still isn’t recognised as a true medicine there. Those politicians and healthcare professionals responsible regularly argue that there are a lack of clinical trials. This is simply an excuse. Between 2005 and 2009, 37 controlled studies were carried out in to the use of cannabinoids for therapeutic purposes. Nine of these studies demonstrate reduction in spasms in sufferers of MS; four demonstrate a positive impact on symptoms and appetite in sufferers of HIV/AIDS. Four other studies demonstrate chronic pain relief and two others demonstrate the impact of cannabis on intestinal disorders. In addition, there are two studies into the use of cannabis for nausea and vomiting, two about cannabis and schizophrenia, one about glaucoma, and two about other illnesses. Since then, the number of studies in the context of the regulation models has increased by more than 100. Many of these studies demonstrate the medicinal effectiveness of the cannabis plant or cannabis preparations, but in Europe these are largely ignored. A double-blind study into cannabis for neuropathy performed in California produced promising results. For this illness, the researchers consider cannabis to be very effective medication with few side effects. In addition, a fairly recent study in Germany into the effect of cannabis as a means of limiting tumour cell reproduction and the impact of CBD on Alzheimer’s attracted a lot of attention among medical experts in the US. In Germany, meanwhile, most doctors are still stuck on whether you can prescribe a terminal cancer patient THC drops without this causing problems with insurance companies. We are talking about a medicine which, 70 years ago, was available in every German pharmacy and did not result in the problems, and even deaths, caused by other medicines.
Cannabis cures increasing numbers of people

Cannabis is by no means a miracle cure, but it would seem that more people than ever are benefiting from it. In Germany itself, very little research has been done and results from other countries are ignored. The result of this should be that the strict regulations are abolished as soon as possible, and not just for medicinal cannabis. We do not need even more studies into teen potheads to make clear that weed should not end up in the hands of children and adolescents. What we need is clear legislation to regulate cannabis, without doomsday scenarios about children and adolescents. But the Federal Government of Germany will not cooperate, as was recently reiterated by Marlene Mortler, who is responsible for the German drugs policy.

Chi usa regolarmente cannabis prima dei 17 anni ha una probabilità di oltre il 60% maggiore di abbandonare gli studi secondari ed è a rischio significativamente più alto di non completare quelli universitari, di usare altre droghe e di tentare il suicidio, rispetto a chi non l'ha mai fumata.

Uno studio australiano del Centro Nazionale di Ricerca su Droghe e Alcool dell'Università del Nuovo Galles del Sud conclude inoltre che non vi è un livello 'sicuro' di uso da parte di adolescenti, e che i risultati educativi più scarsi e i rischi accresciuti si verificano anche fra chi usa la droga meno di una volta al mese.

Gli studiosi hanno elaborato i dati di 3765 partecipanti che hanno usato cannabis, da tre ampi studi di lunga durata sulla frequenza e sugli effetti del suo uso. Secondo gli autori della ricerca, pubblicata su The Lancet Psychiatry, si tratta della dimostrazione più fondata dei danni della marijuana negli anni dell'adolescenza. I ricercatori hanno esaminato una serie di aspetti dello sviluppo fino all'età di 30 anni: completamento degli studi secondari, conseguimento di una laurea, dipendenza dalla cannabis, uso di altre droghe illegali, tentativi di suicidio, e depressione.

Gli adolescenti sotto i 17 anni che assumevano cannabis quotidianamente avevano una probabilità di oltre il 60% minore di completare la scuola superiore o l'università, sette volte più alta di tentare il suicidio, 18 volte maggiore di sviluppare dipendenza dalla cannabis e otto volte maggiore di usare altre droghe illegali più tardi nella vita.

"I risultati sono particolarmente tempestivi, dato che diversi Stati Usa e paesi dell'America Latina si muovono verso la depenalizzazione o legalizzazione della cannabis, che la renderebbero più accessibile ai più giovani", scrive il principale autore dello studio, Edmund Silins.

Fumare marijuana in giovane eta' puo' avere conseguenze di lungo termine sul cervello, e persino ridurre il quoziente intellettivo: lo rivela uno studio dei ricercatori della University of Texas. La ricerca - riportata dal Washington Post - e' stata pubblicata in un momento in cui negli Usa ferve il dibattito sulla legalizzazione della cannabis per uso ricreativo e terapeutico, con i referendum svoltisi in occasione del voto di midterm che vanno in questa direzione. Lo studio mostra come ci siano differenze cerebrali tra i fumatori abituali di marijuana e le altre persone.

Gli scienziati, in particolare, hanno osservato 48 soggetti che fanno uso di cannabis almeno quattro volte alla settimana e hanno iniziato a fumare tra i 14 e i 30 anni, notando che hanno meno materia grigia nella zona della corteccia orbito-frontale rispetto a 62 soggetti che non ne fanno uso. "Prima si inizia a fare uso di marijuana, piu' pronunciate sono le differenze", ha spiegato ai media statunitensi la dottoressa Francesca Filbey, autrice principale dello studio e professore alla School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences dell'University of Texas.

"L'adolescenza e' il momento in cui il cervello inizia a maturare - ha precisato - qualunque esposizione a sostanze tossiche puo' avere conseguenze decisive". Mentre la dottoressa Susan Weiss, direttrice per gli Affari Scientifici del National Institute on Drug Abuse, ha affermato che lo studio fornisce importanti prove sui pericoli causati dalla cannabis. "E' una ricerca complessa e interessante che mostra come l'utilizzo frequente di marijuana, soprattutto in giovane eta', ha significative conseguenze negative sul cervello", ha sottolineato Weiss, precisando che tali risultati rappresentano una sfida alla convinzione diffusa che la cannabis sia una droga innocua.

Chiedo a tutti coloro che fanno uso di Cannabis, di continuare a chiamarla col nome originale, ma non certo col nome marijuana.

' Nello studio, pubblicato sul Journal of Neurosciences, le persone che avevano usato cannabis una o due volte la settimana anche per pochi mesi, sono state trovate avere cambiamenti nelle zone del cervello che regolano le emozioni, la motivazione e la dipendenza.

I ricercatori della Harvard Medical School hanno effettuate scansioni 3D dettagliate sul cervello degli studenti che avevano consumato cannabis raramente e non erano assuefatti e li hanno confrontati con quelle di studenti che non avevano mai consumato la droga.

Due sezioni principali del cervello sono risultate essere colpite. Ovviamente, più alto il consumo di cannabis dei soggetti dello studio, maggiori le anomalie cerebrali su migliaia di soggetti .

L’autore della ricerca , il dottor Hans Breiter, professore di psichiatria e scienze comportamentali alla Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, ha dichiarato : “Questo studio solleva una sfida forte all’idea che l’uso occasionale di marijuana non sia associato a conseguenze negative. ...."

STUDIO, CANNABIS CAUSA L’INSORGERE DI PSICOSI: SCHIZOFRENIA E DISTURBO BIPOLARE

Nel nuovo studio, pubblicato in Schizophrenia Bulletin, i ricercatori si sono concentrati sui modelli di consumo di cannabis, il sesso e le relazioni tra tali fattori e un’insorgenza precoce del primo episodio psicotico .

Lo studio svolto da ricercatori britannici su adulti che hanno vissuto episodi di psicosi, l’assunzione di marijuana è stata collegata all’insorgere della malattia.
Il legame tra l’uso della cannabis e le malattie psichiche è ormai noto, soprattutto nei casi di schizofrenia.

In questo caso, come riferisce Marta Di Forti , che ha guidato la ricerca presso l’Istituto di Psichiatria al Kings College, lo studio associa l’uso quotidiano di cannabis all’insorgere della psicosi.

I ricercatori hanno esaminato 410 pazienti di età compresa tra i 18 e i 65 anni , due terzi dei quali di sesso maschile , i quali hanno avuto un episodio psicotico e sono stati ricoverati in unità psichiatriche.
E hanno scoperto che i maschi sono più propensi ad usare la cannabis e per questo avevano una più giovane età alla insorgenza della psicosi. L’età media al momento del primo episodio psicotico per gli utilizzatori di sesso maschile di cannabis era 26 anni, e per gli quelli di sesso femminile era quasi 29 anni.

“Vorrei cercare di capire perché le persone usano cannabis, cosa ricevono da questo utilizzo e poi coinvolgerli spiegando loro come questo può causare danni al cervello e aumentare il rischio di psicosi “, ha detto la ricercatrice Marta Di Forti.
